Sad to see no team from Finland entered, especially as they had 2 teams scoring gp points this year,
on the plus side good to see Denmark,Italy and Ireland racing.

Interview in a local newspaper (in Dutch)

Zijspancross onder de loep met August Muller
Op 11 en 12 oktober vindt in Markelo de Motorcross of European Nations – sidecar & quads – plaats. In de aanloop naar deze bloedstollende wedstrijd organiseerde Motorclub Ons Genoegen vorige week een test- en persdag op het prachtige circuit De Herikerberg. Daarbij was ook sidecar en crossheld August Muller uit Holten aanwezig; hij beantwoorde voor ons een aantal vragen over zijspancross, toen en nu:

Is de kwaliteit van zijspancross veranderd?

“Absoluut. Het niveau van de Nederlandse rijders was lange tijd erg hoog. Nu zie je dat ook landen uit het Oostblok en België goed presteren. Over het algemeen valt me op dat de professionaliteit in de sport is teruggelopen, vooral materieel gezien. Het is veel eenheidskoek; de motoren lijken allemaal op elkaar, dat was vroeger wel anders. Dit heeft ook gevolgen voor de sponsoring want zonder specifieke uitstraling bindt een importeur of sponsor zich minder snel.”

Was het vinden van sponsors vroeger makkelijker?
“Ik denk het wel, alleen al vanwege de hele financiële situatie in de wereld. Maar je moet als rijder ook zelf aan de weg timmeren; zelf kranten bellen, telefoontjes plegen, et cetera. Wij bouwden destijds ook zelf banden op met de pers, het was een klein wereldje. Ik weet nog dat ik bij Venko Honda langs mocht komen voor eventuele sponsoring. In het gesprek bleek dat zij mijn hele uitrusting, alle materialen, olie, enzovoorts, wilden verzorgen. Ingehouden maar zo blij als een kind liepen we naar buiten, we spraken elkaar toe: ‘niks zeggen’, ‘hou je in’. Eenmaal buiten barstte de vreugde los!”

Het lukte je helaas niet om wereldkampioen te worden. Daniël Willemsen lukte het al 10 keer. Hoe verklaar je dat?
“Het was een ander tijdperk, de top was in mijn tijd breder. Maar Wat Daniël Willemsen presteert is ongelofelijk, daar heb ik veel respect voor. Hij is echt ontzettend goed. Ik ben benieuwd hoe de sport zich zal ontwikkelen met nieuwe aanwas zoals Etienne Bax.”
Welk seizoen blijft jou het meest bij?
“Het seizoen van 1988, zonder twijfel. In dat jaar reed ik voor Venko Honda, het wereldkampioenschap ging toen aan mijn neus voorbij vanwege een afgebroken stuurdemper. Wel boekte ik een prachtige overwinning bij de Grand prix op de Herikerberg in Markelo.”

We hebben geen wereldkampioen meer in Nederland, hoe komt dat?
“Ondanks dat het een oer-Hollandse sport is, ontbreekt het ons inderdaad aan een wereldkampioen. Bax zat er dichtbij, helaas was het seizoen voor hem te kort. Voor de sport is dat wel goed want het wekt meer internationale interesse. Hopelijk groeit het wereldkampioenschap zijspancross binnen Europa of zelfs wereldwijd. De reden dat dit niet gebeurt vindt vooral zijn oorzaak in het gebrek aan financiële middelen; de tickets, het verblijf, de materialen. Je reist met een heel team en dat is kostbaar.”

Gaat de sport je nooit vervelen?

“Zeker niet. Ik bezoek nog graag en regelmatig wedstrijden. Als oud-rijder kijk je natuurlijk kritisch. Hoe dan ook, ik blijf altijd een liefhebber van de sport. Ik zou zeggen, kom kijken op 11 en 12 oktober!”

Event:
On the 11th and 12th of October in Markelo the Motorcross of European Nations for Sidecars and Quads will take place at the famous circuit “de Herikerberg”.
The circuit where more major international competitions and Grand Prix were held than anywhere else, the final event of an exciting motorcross season will be organized.

More than 14 European countries will sent their best three teams in both disciplines to Markelo with only one goal: to bring the prize to their own country.
Major contenders are France, Belgium and the Netherlands, but also other countries have strong competitors..
On Saturday the 11th of October test sessions and qualifyraces will take place. On Sunday the 12th of October the races will take place and in the end the final victory goes to the country of which three teams had the best scores in the races.

Facts:
The circuit is located in the Herikerberg Markelo, right in the province of Overijssel, in the north east of the Netherlands. The circuit is easily accessible, you can drive up the A1 motorway, exit 27, it's still a 10 minute drive to the paddock.
