Stage 3 Special - 314km:
Competitor : Bike : Stage Pos : Overall Pos : Stage Time : Overall Time : Overall Behind Moto Leader : Overall Behind Sidecar Leader
Lanaro / Howald : Aprilia : 214th : 207th : 6h47m30s : 10h48m46s : 4h45m34s : 0h00m00s

Team Hog Wild experienced mechanical problems during the Stage 3 1st Liason. Rumor has it that they had sprocket problems and recieved some mechanical assistance in temporarily rigging the damaged sprocket. Unofficial news is that they were not allowed or were unable to continue on the Special. The tracking system shows them proceeding on to the end of the stage and the bivouac, but no time is posted for the Special. More info forthcoming as it is received...

The Latest Speculation on Hog Wild Racing

Post by WildTurkeyWay »

The latest speculation on Hog Wild Racing. In reading the rules, we found that a competitor arriving to the beginning of the Special more than 1 hour late is disqualified from the race and cannot continue on the course. All official equipment (electronics, road book, etc.) are supposedly surrendered to the officials. If the Iritrack system was functioning properly, there is no doubt that Scott and Duane arrived late. While we have not heard any official news, this unfortunate circumstance probably seals the deal for whether the team will be continuing. Sad news if it is all true.

Further details of the mechanical problem. Again, rumor has it that the front drive sprocket was warn completely down. The team supposedly sought out a mechanic and had one manufactured to get them back on the road. Unfortunately, this took too long.

Hog Wild Racing Team Done!

Post by WildTurkeyWay »

As rumored, the Hog Wild Racing Team of Scott Whitney, Duane McDowell and mechanic Ralph Whitney are out of the race in Stage 3 due to a chain/sprocket problem. The were stopped for a significant time in the 1st Liaison of Stage 3 making repairs. The repairs were successful but they arrived at the beginning of the Stage 3 Special too late to continue. Scott is on his way home (which will take several days), no word about Duane's travels, Ralph is continuing on to Dakar in the support truck with other team mechanics.

Thank you all for your encouragement and support. I will leave the next Hog Wild posting for Scott when he makes landfall at an internet connection.

Cheers,
Eric Whitney

Dakar continues without Hog Wild Racing

Post by WildTurkeyWay »

Stage 4 Special - 386km:
Competitor : Bike : Stage Pos : Overall Pos : Stage Time : Overall Time : Overall Behind Moto Leader
Lanaro / Howald : Aprilia : 197th : 195th : 10h21m30s : 21h10m16s : 10h52m19s
Whitney / McDowell : Harley Davidson : DNF : Out : - : - : - : - (DNF Stage 3 Special)
Morsillo / : Ural : Out : - : - : - : - : - (DNF Stage 2)

The race continues on without Hog Wild Racing. The last remaining Sidecar team of Lanaro/Howald (SUI) are having a long day. The have just completed the Stage 4 Special in 10h21m30s. They still have a nearly 200km tarmak trek to the bivouac. We all wish them luck on their endeavor to get to Dakar.

Best wishes to my compatriots. They didn't finish last year, so I hope they'll do it now!

From what I can tell, the Swiss sidecar team either did not start today's stage or possibly started the special and never got to Checkpoint 1. The tracking system never showed them and the Standings and Checkpoint records do not show anything beyond a Special start time of 9:02am. Does anyone have any more info?
