At the offical Dakar website I found this message:
23h40 – Tough times for the Harley
Scott Whitney and Duane McDowell, who are competing on a Harley-Davidson side-car that they built, have already witnessed quite a few upsets for their first Dakar: “For two days now, we have been troubled by a chain problem. It isn’t that bad but we have to stop all the time. That’s why the day was so long. A designed a device to guide the chain in a better way and it’s better now ». Thankfully, Mr Whitney, father who takes care of his son’s assistance has all night to work on the machine.

Hope they can solve the problems!

Missed on live tracking

Hi Paul

I saw this message too and I hoped, they could handle the problem. But on the live track on dakar.com I can't find them. :-(

The Swiss Team has an entry on the first checkpoint.

I hope, Scott and Duane are only a little late... :-?

Hog Wild Racing Team Done!

Post by WildTurkeyWay »

As rumored, the Hog Wild Racing Team of Scott Whitney, Duane McDowell and mechanic Ralph Whitney are out of the race in Stage 3 due to a chain/sprocket problem. The were stopped for a significant time in the 1st Liaison of Stage 3 making repairs. The repairs were successful but they arrived at the beginning of the Stage 3 Special too late to continue. Scott is on his way home (which will take several days), no word about Duane's travels, Ralph is continuing on to Dakar in the support truck with other team mechanics.

Thank you all for your encouragement and support. I will leave the next Hog Wild posting for Scott when he makes landfall at an internet connection.

Cheers,
Eric Whitney

Absolutely gutted for you !

Do we know what the nature of the chain fault was yet?

Good luck for 2006 although you may not much feel like it right now. Don't give up, you will have years when you have retired to feel resentment. Trust me, I KNOW !!

;-)

( That's me waving but I did drive too !! I just enjoyed showing off. )
